How do I access archived revisions of a page on my website?

WordPress automatically saves a revision each time you save or update a page or post. You can use revisions to see what changed, compare versions, and restore an earlier version if something was changed or deleted by mistake.

View revisions

  1. Log in to WordPress and open the page or post in the editor.
  2. If the settings sidebar isn't showing, click the Settings icon in the top right.
  3. Select the Page (or Post) tab.
  4. Click the number next to Revisions.

Don't see Revisions? The page may not have been updated since it was first published, so there's nothing to compare yet. Revisions may also be limited on your site. Contact Gate 39 if you need to recover content.

Compare and restore a revision

On WordPress 7.0 and newer:

  1. Revisions open right inside the editor. Use the timeline slider at the top to move between versions. Each shows the date and time it was saved.
  2. Changes are highlighted:
    • Green: content that was added.
    • Red: content that was removed.
    • Yellow: blocks that were changed.
  3. When you find the version you want, click Restore. This button replaces Update while you're viewing revisions.

On older versions of WordPress:

  1. A separate Compare Revisions screen opens.
  2. Drag the slider to choose a version. The screen shows removed text in red and added text in green.
  3. Click Restore This Revision.

Good to know:

  • Restoring can be undone. Restoring a revision saves a new revision, so your current version stays in the history.
  • Autosaves. WordPress also saves an autosave of your work while you edit. If your browser closes unexpectedly, you'll see a notice to restore it the next time you open the page.
  • Revisions only cover content. They include the page's title and content. Some other settings, such as menus or theme options, aren't included.

Using a page builder?

If your site uses a page builder such as Elementor, use the builder's own History or Revisions panel inside the builder instead. Contact Gate 39 if you're not sure which applies to your site.
