How do I Change an A Record?

Edit an A record in your DNS in your GoDaddy account.

An A record connects a domain name (like example.com) to the IP address of the server hosting the website. You may need to update it when moving a site to new hosting.

Before you start: changing an A record can take your website or email offline if the new IP address is wrong. Confirm the correct IP address with your hosting provider or the Gate 39 team first. To change www, edit the CNAME record instead.

Check where your DNS is managed
If your domain's nameservers point somewhere other than GoDaddy (for example, Cloudflare or AWS Route 53), edits in GoDaddy won't have any effect. Make the change with that provider instead. In GoDaddy, the domain's DNS page shows which nameservers are in use.

Steps

  1. Sign in to GoDaddy and open your Domain Portfolio.
  2. Click the domain you want to update to open its settings.
  3. Select the DNS tab to see the domain's records.
  4. Find the A record you need to change and click Edit.
  5. Update the record:
    • Name: use @ for the main domain (example.com), or a prefix like shop for a subdomain (shop.example.com).
    • Value: the new IP address, usually provided by your hosting company.
    • TTL: how long servers cache the record. The default of 1 hour works for most changes.
  6. Click Save.
  7. If your domain has Domain Protection, enter the verification code GoDaddy sends to confirm the change.

How long does it take?
Most changes take effect within an hour but can take up to 48 hours to update everywhere. To check progress, look up your domain on a DNS checker such as whatsmydns.net.
