Miro Quick Start: Reviewing and Giving Feedback on Your Board

Tips for using Miro boards when collaborating with Gate 39.

As part of collaborating with Gate 39, you may receive a link to a Miro board. We use these boards to present information, such as plans, structures, and ideas in progress, and to collect your feedback in one shared place.

Miro is an online whiteboard. Think of it as a giant wall you can zoom in and out of, covered with notes, shapes, and images that you and the Gate 39 team can see and change in real time. You only need a few basic skills to review a board and give feedback, and this guide covers just those.

1. Getting in
  1. Click the board link Gate 39 sent you. The board opens in your web browser. Chrome, Edge, Safari, and Firefox all work, and no download is needed.
  2. If the board is password protected, enter the password Gate 39 provided with the link.
  3. If Miro asks for your name, enter it so the team can see who added each note or change.

You do not need to create a Miro account or sign in. If you already have a Miro account, you're welcome to use it, but it isn't required.

Use a laptop or desktop if you can. Miro works on phones and tablets, but editing is much easier with a mouse or trackpad and a keyboard.

Tip: Bookmark the board once it opens so you can get back to it without hunting for the email.

2. Getting around the board

The board is bigger than your screen. You move around it the way you would a map.

To do this

Mouse

Trackpad

Move around (pan)

Hold the spacebar and drag, or click and drag on an empty area

Two-finger swipe in any direction

Zoom in or out

Scroll wheel (or Ctrl/Cmd + scroll)

Pinch with two fingers

See the whole board

Press Shift + 1, or use the zoom controls in the bottom-right corner

Same

Lost? Press Shift + 1 to zoom out to the full board, then zoom back in on the area you want.

Frames. Many boards are organized into frames, which are labeled sections like pages in a document. Open the Frames list (usually an icon in the bottom-left or top toolbar) to jump straight to a section by name.

Scrolling feels wrong? Miro has mouse and trackpad modes. Click the ? or settings icon in the bottom-right corner and look for navigation settings to switch between them.

3. Working with sticky notes

Sticky notes are the main way to add and change feedback on the board.

Edit an existing note. Double-click the note, type your changes, then click anywhere outside it (or press Esc) to finish.

Add a new note.

  1. Click the sticky note icon in the left toolbar (or press N).
  2. Click on the board where you want it.
  3. Start typing. Click outside the note when done.

Change a note's color. Click the note once to select it. A small toolbar appears above it; click the color circle and pick a new color. Some teams use colors to mean something, such as yellow for comments and green for approved, so follow any key on the board.

Tip: To add a note that matches one already on the board, select it and press Ctrl/Cmd + D to duplicate it, then edit the text.

4. Moving shapes and notes

Move one item. Click and drag it to its new spot. This works for sticky notes, shapes, text, and images.

Move several items at once. Either hold Shift and click each item, or click on an empty area and drag a box around them. Then drag any one of the selected items and the whole group moves together.

Resize. Select the item and drag one of the corner handles.

Delete. Select the item and press Delete or Backspace.

Undo a mistake. Press Ctrl/Cmd + Z. You can undo several steps in a row. Ctrl/Cmd + Shift + Z redoes.

Tip: If dragging an empty area moves the whole board instead of drawing a selection box, hold Shift (or Ctrl/Cmd) while you drag.

5. Leaving comments

Use a comment when you have a question or suggestion but don't want to change the content yourself.

  1. Click the comment icon (a speech bubble) in the left toolbar, or press C.
  2. Click the spot or item you want to comment on.
  3. Type your comment and press Enter.

To get someone's attention, type @ and their name. They'll get a notification. Replies show up in the same thread, and you can see all comments from the comments icon in the top-right area of the screen.

6. Good to know
  • Everything saves automatically. There is no save button. Changes appear for everyone right away.
  • Some items may be locked. If something won't move or select, it was locked on purpose, usually a background, header, or layout element. Leave those as they are.
  • You'll see other people's cursors. Colored arrows with names are teammates working on the board at the same time. You can work alongside them without conflict.
  • You won't break it. Undo handles most slips, and our team can restore earlier versions of the board if needed. Feel free to experiment.
  • Stuck? Leave a comment on the board or reply to our email, and we'll help.
